While its roots, heart and soul all lie in the fringe of illegal pirate broadcast radio and legal hobbyist shortwave and ham radio, the growth of the Internet, music file sharing, and streaming technology has led to the development of laws which protect (and sometime infuriate) broadcasters of all stripes, as well as the copyrights of artists and music labels. This panel will discuss the requirements and pitfalls of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, what it means for both hobbyist and professional broadcasters seeking to use the Internet as a way to expand their range beyond terrestrial broadcast boundaries, and recent attempts by the music industry to further restrict the development of internet and satellite radio. This latter attempt has raised fears by free speech and privacy advocates that fear that these attempts are an opening salvo to equate Internet radio with illegal file sharing and P2P networks. Mark Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Live365.Com, San Francisco, California 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Lunch Provided. 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm Automating Your Music Station: SAM3 Broadcaster It’s amazing what good software can do for your station. In this segment, SAM3 Broadcaster creator and Spacial Audio founder Bryan Payne demonstrates why SAM3 Broadcaster has become the gold standard for Internet radio hobbyists and professionals alike. SAM is essentially a “radio station in a box,” giving you all automation and features enjoyed by professional terrestrial radio stations on a single Windows computer. SAM3 works seamlessly with Live365 and most other streaming providers, or can be set up as a standalone server with nothing other than an Internet connection. Add music and your content and go! Bryan Payne, Chief Executive Officer, Spacial Audio Solutions 2:15 pm – 2:45 pm Live365 and Future Developments As the largest Internet Radio Directory in the world, Live365 has an audience of more than 3 million listeners each month. Live365 is unique in that its programming is created by music fans; anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can create their own Internet radio station for a small monthly fee. The result is the most diverse array of high-quality streaming audio available today, with thousands of stations spanning myriad genres, broadcasting from over 150 countries. Bob Mills, known as the ever popular “bamman” on Live365 and as creator and program director for Attention Span Radio, discusses the latest plans for Live and what the future holds in store. Bob Mills, Live365.Com Technical Support Specialist(Attention Span Radio) 2:45 pm – 3:00 pm Afternoon Break Soft drinks and snacks provided. 3:00 pm – 4:15 pm Programming Your Station Like the Big Boys As any terrestrial broadcaster will tell you, the key to a successful radio broadcast is the way you program and distribute your music. This function is typically handled by something called a “clockwheel,” a kind of formula for what types of songs play in what kind of order in a certain time period (usually one hour). Clockwheels keep your station fresh by ensuring that your station plays different kinds of music, yet still ensure that your bread and butter hits get played often enough. In this section, Steve Warren of Music1Net will demonstrate Music1, a clockwheel generator designed for both terrestrial and Live365 broadcasters. The Live365 version tracks what music you have loaded on to Live365, and automatically keeps songs from playing too much or too little based upon criteria you set up. Steve Warren, Chief Executive Officer, Music1 4:15 pm – 5:00 pm So, You Wanna Be In A Band? They recently performed at SXSW in March, and lead singer Amie Miriello has been featured as a VO5 Red Hot Rising Star in Vogue, Glamour, Allure, Self, Teen Vogue and Jane Magazines. Their first CD on Jive Records is due out three days after the summit, so come see them while you still can. You can already hear their first single “Walk Over Me” on radio stations nationwide. Opening for Dirtie Blonde is unsigned Houston sensation O”DOYLE RULES. O'Doyle Rules was formed in Houston almost 9 years ago. They like to think of themselves as “three tards (now 4) that like to play shows and have a good time.” Their most recent claim to fame is the song “Never Known” which is featured in the movie and on the soundtrack for the movie The Benchwarmers, produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore Productions. In fact, Sandler wore one of their t-shirts on a recent Jay Leno appearance. Known for their meaty riffs and energetic stage presence, the band has been compared to blink-182 and Good Charlotte--without the whine. 10:00 – Cows Homecoming Sixth Street Come see why Austin has the deserved title of “Live Music Capital of the World |
